Diego Lugon witnessed the original 1993 Mythodia concert by Vangelis and shares his experiences.
As you can imagine the concert was great in a very nice theater Irodiou Tou Attikou, the ancient theater of the Acropolis.
All the VIPs were present, Roman Polanski, Emmanuelle Seigner, Irine Papas, Nastassja Kinski, Costas Simitis and Farah Diba and lots of other VIPs.
The concert was forecast at 9:45 p.m. and began at 10:15 p.m. ... with some problems. A lot of people couldn't enter the theater and stood by the doors. I think they sold too many tickets and there were no more seats available.
Vangelis entered the stage and people were shouting "ESKOS" which means unbearable. They stopped after 20 minutes and Vangelis continued to play. It was somehow disappointing, but after that you forget and you go on into the music.
He played Mythodia for one hour, which was very like "Mask". You can imagine being in an open air ancient Greek theater with Vangelis playing in the middle of ancient stones.
The night was cool and starry. On the ancient wall with columns, behind Vangelis, some pictures were projected; pictures like the Vergina's Star and the head of Alexander The Great.
At the end, one guy shouted: "Bravo, Megale ! then tha se aphisoume na phygis apopse!" which means "Bravo, great man ! We will not let you go to night!".
Vangelis, after Mythodia, played Chariots of Fire, Conquest of Paradise and ended at the third "encore" with the Greek National Anthem. At that time every one stood up.
At the entrance I bought the booklet of the concert, but I noticed that people had in there hands something else. I learned that it was a special painting very nicely covered like the box of El Greco, but smaller.
I stood at the entrance when everybody went out and noticed that only VIPs had this painting. I saw one guy having two of this and he gave me one. He was Italian but I didn't recognized him. They all went afterwards to have a cocktail party with Vangelis at the garden of Irodio just next to the theater.
In one word this concert was very nice, and for me to see Vangelis for the first time in these conditions was extraordinary.
